Eindhovens Dagblad: “The TU/e supercomputer is just the beginning”

The Eindhovens Dagblad reported on the NVIDIA GTC Viewing Party at TU/e, where more than 300 people gathered in the Blauwe Zaal to watch Jensen Huang's keynote. In the article, Richard Zoontjens, lead of the TU/e Supercomputing Center, and Fons van der Sommen explain what TU/e's AI supercomputer means for research and for the region.

The article, “De supercomputer van de TU/e is maar het begin” by Peter Scholtes, appeared in the regional section of the Eindhovens Dagblad on Wednesday 28 October 2026. Its main points:

  • Compute to compete. In his talk, Richard Zoontjens argued that computing power decides who wins in the age of AI, and that this gives Europe opportunities, even though the US and China lead today. He sees Eindhoven as an important centre for AI development:

„We hebben hier heel veel kennis, kunde en talent.” (“We have a great deal of knowledge, skill and talent here.”) – Richard Zoontjens

  • Faster cancer detection. Fons van der Sommen, professor of computer vision and image processing, explained that training AI models to find tumours in CT scans requires processing enormous amounts of data, which the supercomputer makes possible.

  • Chip research. The supercomputer can also give a boost to AI research for ASML, such as PhD projects that detect defects in the patterns on wafers.
  • Open to smaller companies. With support from the Province of Noord-Brabant and the BOM, the supercomputer is also made available to smaller companies, so they can innovate with AI without investing in their own computing power.
  • Choosing the right battles. Zoontjens called for a focus on new core technologies where the region and Europe can make a difference, rather than competing head-on with the US or China.

The NVIDIA GTC Viewing Party was organised by a group of partners including TU/e and Prodrive Technologies, which the article also features.
